WHY SMARTSHELTERS ARE THE SMART CHOICE

BETTER HEALTH AND PRODUCTIVITY

A livestock shelter gives your animals a comfortable, well-ventilated space to rest, protected from the elements all year round. Better thermal comfort and more rest time support healthier animals, improved well-being, and stronger overall farm productivity.

SIMPLER LIVESTOCK MANAGEMENT

With all animals under one roof, day-to-day farm tasks are much more efficient. A dedicated livestock shelter simplifies feeding, drafting, weighing, treatment, and general handling — helping reduce daily labour and supporting smoother farm operations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is housing important for livestock?

Keeping your animals comfortable and healthy isn’t just good for them, it’s good for business. Livestock grow faster, are more productive and fetch higher prices when they’re afforded the best conditions. And with New Zealand’s extreme rain and wind, protecting your animals with a covered shelter is more practical than relying on the vegetative or topographical features of your property.

SmartShelters are designed to be relocatable and easy to assemble. They cost less than traditional livestock barns, while still providing animals with a dry, well-ventilated space to lie. Providing your herd of cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, deer or any other type of livestock with a SmartShelters shelter simply makes financial sense.

What types of livestock need shelter?

Pigs are notoriously good at evading fencing, and don’t require the grazing area that other animals do, so pig shelters are all but essential if you are to efficiently manage a herd.

Shelters are commonly used on a more temporary basis for other animals. We build sheep shelters, cattle shelters, goat shelters, and deer shelters for stand-off, milking, feeding and wintering/loafing situations.

How much room do I need when housing livestock?

While there are a number of factors to consider when calculating space for housing livestock, the following numbers can be used as a guide for anyone doing preliminary planning for a livestock shelter.

Animal Space per head in enclosed housing
Beef cow 10-12m²
Dairy cow (wintering/other long term use) 9-11m²
Dairy cow (overnight/other short term use) 6-8m²
Pig 5-6m²
Sheep 2m²
Goat 2m²
How much does a SmartShelters livestock shed cost?

The cost of your livestock shelter is variable, depending on these factors:

  • Width, length, height
  • Environmental and ground conditions
  • Location accessibility
  • Optional add-ons

Remember: your livestock shelter is an investment. A well-designed livestock shelter can support long-term gains in efficiency, animal comfort, and farm productivity.

What is the temperature within a SmartShelters farm animal shelter?

The tough cover and excellent airflow of a SmartShelters shelter allows for regulated temperatures throughout the year. Your animals will be 3-4°C warmer in winter and 3-4°C cooler in summer than in an unsheltered area. The shade helps reduce the risk of heat stress in animals, preventing productivity loss.
