A temporary shelter is an engineered, relocatable structure designed to create a protected, covered space without the permanence of traditional buildings.
SmartShelters temporary shelters offer protection against New Zealand’s harsh elements while remaining flexible enough for evolving sites. Each structure combines high-strength galvanised structural steel framing with a tensioned SmartShield® fabric canopy. Engineered to AS/NZS 1170.2:2021, the system is designed to meet site-specific wind and snow loads. The modular design allows fast installation, easy expansion, and straightforward relocation, making them ideal for leased land, shifting operational sites, or urgent deployment.
SmartShelters temporary shelter solutions include:
Whether you need a protected work zone, equipment storage, operational hub, or covered logistics space, SmartShelters delivers engineered, reusable protection that adapts as your site changes.
Our temporary shelters serve industries across New Zealand, protecting equipment, machinery, goods and people in demanding environments — from farms and construction sites to ports, quarries and remote communities.
Since 1914, SmartShelters has been designing and manufacturing high-performance shelter systems in New Zealand. From early military canvas supply to today’s engineered temporary and commercial structures, our history is built on durability, innovation, and long-term reliability. When you choose SmartShelters, you’re working with a company that understands structural performance in demanding environments.
All SmartShelters temporary storage shelters are manufactured in Auckland for New Zealand conditions. We do not import lightweight alternatives. Local production means tighter quality control, faster lead times, and ongoing technical support from a team that understands your site and compliance requirements.
We stand behind our workmanship with a 12-year limited structural warranty covering both the steel framework and SmartShield® membrane. That long-term backing reflects our confidence in our materials, engineering, and manufacturing standards.
All SmartShelters temporary shelters are designed in accordance with Australian and NZ wind loading standards, with site-specific engineering provided where required. Wind ratings are tailored to your location, including high-wind coastal and alpine zones. You receive certified structural plans that ensure compliance, durability, and reliable performance in demanding New Zealand conditions.
Our primary arches and structural members are manufactured from premium C450-grade galvanised structural steel with a minimum wall thickness of 4 mm. We use square or rectangular profiles for superior rigidity and long-term durability, not light-gauge imports that compromise performance.
SmartShield® is our exclusive, PVC-free structural membrane engineered for New Zealand’s harsh UV, wind, and snow conditions. It delivers exceptional tear resistance, high UV stability, and excellent natural light diffusion, creating bright internal spaces while maintaining long-term weather protection.
SmartShelters has supplied shelters for government departments, conservation projects, industrial clients and infrastructure operators across New Zealand. Our shelters help protect lives, equipment and critical goods while supporting operational safety and security on active sites.
Watch how the Department of Conservation used SmartShelters to support remote operations in challenging environments.
Our smallest temporary shelter starts at 6m x 6m. From there, we offer a wide range of standard sizes, with widths extending up to 35m (pole-mounted) or 45m (container-mounted). Lengths can be customised to suit your available space and operational needs.
Our temporary shelters are purpose-built for commercial, industrial, and operational use. They are commonly used on farms, construction sites, mining and quarry operations, logistics yards, infrastructure projects, and for temporary warehousing or event infrastructure.
Many standard temporary shelter systems can be installed by a small crew within a day, depending on size and mounting method, enabling rapid deployment compared to traditional construction.
Our PortaSpan® and QuickSmart® Container Shelter orders are ready for dispatch within 7 days of order confirmation. For container mounted shelters with larger spans or relocatable dome barns, manufacturing and dispatch typically take 4–6 weeks depending on size, engineering requirements, and site specifications. Our team will confirm your expected delivery timeframe during the quoting process.
Yes. All SmartShelters temporary outdoor structures are backed by a 12-year limited warranty covering both the structural steel framework and SmartShield® fabric membrane.
Our frames are manufactured from high-grade galvanised structural steel (meeting or exceeding C350 grade, with C450 used where strength is critical). The roof membrane is our exclusive SmartShield® PE-based structural fabric — PVC-free, UV-stable, and engineered for New Zealand’s elements.
All temporary storage structures are engineered in accordance with AS/NZS 1170.2:2021 wind loading standards. We provide site-specific engineering plans and producer statements (PS1) where required for consent or compliance.
In most cases, building consent is required, particularly for larger commercial or longer-term installations. However, some temporary or lightweight structures may qualify for exemptions depending on size and intended use. We can assist with engineering documentation and support your consent application if needed.
Yes. Our temporary shelter structures are designed for disassembly and relocation where required. Depending on the mounting method, they can be moved between sites and reused across projects, making them a cost-effective solution for leased land, evolving site layouts, or staged developments.
