A SmartShelters dressage arena provides more riding time at a fraction of the cost of traditional equine buildings. Riders and horses alike will enjoy a more comfortable experience, protected from wind and rain in a quiet, well-lit environment.
We understand the importance of appropriate shelter for a horse’s well-being. Our covered dressage arenas feature C450+ grade DuraSteel and ultra-tough SMARTSHIELD® fabric, enabling efficient air flow and ventilation, drainage, manure management, and dry flooring. The clear span structure design eliminates internal obstructions and braces, providing total flexibility and future-proofing.
We work with you early in the design process to customise the size, structure, and components of your shelter. Our Auckland team has perfected the manufacturing process, so that you can get your arena up on site quicker than ever.
Our standard small arena is 20m x 40m, while our large, competition-level dressage arena measures 20m x 60m.
Need a different size? We can build a custom dressage arena to suit your needs, with spans from 20m to 45m. Whether you want to accommodate more riders, fit the arena within a specific part of your property, or give yourself more room to move, we’ve got you covered.
A dressage arena shelter allows equestrians to ride in any weather. The flexible membrane fabric protects the arena from wind and rain while minimising the sound. For organisations, this means fewer postponed dressage tests and competitions. And for riders, more time to train and spend time with your horse.
Whether you use sand footing or synthetic footing, our shelters ensure optimal horse well-being by keeping the ground dry in all conditions. The excellent ventilation and coverage mean better temperature regulation in the riding environment — warmer in winter, cooler in summer.
As New Zealand's original shelter manufacturer, we carry over a century of hands-on experience into every arena construction project. Our deep industry knowledge means you get personalised guidance and an indoor horse arena tailored to your needs.
We manufacture our dressage arenas in Auckland. They’re built to meet the latest engineering and industry standards, delivering reliable performance and construction quality that sets the benchmark. Your arena is tailored to your needs and backed by local expertise.
Get a 12-year warranty against manufacturing defects for both the arena cover and frame—the longest in the shelter market. Using only premium materials proven under New Zealand conditions, our dressage arena shelters deliver lasting value and complete peace of mind.
Our main shelter arches use premium C450-grade structural galvanised steel that consistently outperforms imported alternatives. Paired with our exclusively available SMARTSHIELD® fabric, you get a structure built to harsh UV exposure, heavy rain, snow and wind.
Make your arena work for your environment. We supply standard 20x60 metre arenas and 20x40 metre arenas, as well as custom sizes from 20m to 45m in width. The post mounted design allows for easy access and relocation for future flexibility.
SmartShelters has supplied dressage arenas to a wide variety of happy customers. We’ve built arenas for the Riding for the Disabled trust, riding schools and many individuals that simply have a deep passion for horses — and enough room on their property to indulge that passion.
No, our riding arenas feature a specialised dressage arena design unsuitable for other uses.
Some factors that affect the price of arena construction include:
It’s important to view your covered arena as an investment. The right arena construction will provide equestrian riding cover, enabling greater riding time, while extending the life of your sand or synthetic surface.
SmartShelters supplies dressage arenas in two industry-standard sizes for training and competitions: 20x40m and 20x60m.
We can build custom-sized dressage arenas on request. Spans (short side) can range from 20m to 45m, while lengths (long side) have no limit.
A covered arena should be tall enough to accommodate the necessary maintenance machinery. It should also offer enough clearance for individuals to ride near the edge of the structure. SmartShelters timber post mounted covered arenas boast excellent headroom, with options from 2.8m to 4m.
At SmartShelters, we build our covered arenas with super strength membrane structure fabric. It’s guaranteed to stay strong for a minimum of 12 years, even in high wind and high snow environments.
The combination of SMARTSHIELD® fabric and clever design means that riders and animals alike will enjoy temperate conditions. SmartShelters covered arenas are often 3-4°C cooler in the summer and 3-4°C warmer in the winter than uncovered dressage arenas.
The flexible SMARTSHIELD® fabric absorbs the energy from wind and rain, preventing loud echoes inside. SmartShelters arenas are far quieter than metal-roofed shelters, making it easier to settle horses and enjoy the ride.
Thanks to the use of super strength membrane structure fabric, a long time. However, the length will depend on the exposed conditions of the construction.. But you can rest assured that all SmartShelters covered arenas come with an industry-leading 12 year warranty.
