When Hawkins needed a fully operational site village for hundreds of contractors working on Auckland Airport's Domestic Terminal Development, they needed it fast, within a tight footprint, and without disrupting an active construction programme. Hawkins, one of New Zealand's largest and most respected construction companies, has partnered with Auckland Airport for more than 40 years.

The project required a central, weather-protected hub to support hundreds of contractors — a space for meals, meetings, rest, and daily operations. With limited space, tight timelines, and zero tolerance for disruption, traditional construction was not a viable option. The solution needed to be fast to deploy, operational immediately, and adaptable as the project evolved. After evaluating multiple options, Hawkins selected Pacific Portable Buildings and SmartShelters for their ability to deliver a high-performance structure faster and with greater flexibility than permanent construction – the ideal solution for a major infrastructure project that needed to keep moving.

SmartShelters' task was to construct a dynamic, functional, and easily relocatable site village for the Auckland Airport Domestic Terminal Development project – and that's exactly what was delivered.

The complex featured a fully custom, large-span 10m wide x 42m long shelter mounted to double-stacked portable buildings. The large-span design eliminated internal columns, maximising usable space and enabling efficient layout of high-traffic areas, eliminating internal obstructions and provide a safe controlled environment for daily operations.

The finished structure houses a fully equipped site village, with offices, training rooms, kitchen and dining facilities, storage and ablution blocks all within one complete hub. Designed for reuse, the structure can be quickly dismantled, relocated, and reconfigured,  extending its value well beyond a single project phase .

Despite a constrained footprint, the structure was deployed rapidly using a staged installation approach that allowed construction activity to continue uninterrupted– ensuring the project remained on schedule with minimal disruption to ongoing site activity. This ensured programme continuity and eliminated downtime risk

The structure was customised with dedicated zones for catering, prayer, meetings, storage, offices, and ablutions. SmartShelter's unique fabric helped provide excellent weather protection, temperature regulation, and natural light – creating a dry, bright, and safe environment This directly contributed to improved worker comfort, morale, and on-site productivity.

The result was a true site hub – a place where teams can connect, eat, rest, and collaborate. By using a flexible, reusable structure, the project avoided the cost, time, and rigidity of permanent construction reducing capital expenditure and improving project agility. and efficient management of a large on-site workforce.

Designed for reuse, the structure can be dismantled and relocated, extending its value across multiple phases and future projects – ensuring long-term return on investment beyond a single project lifecycle.
